On first look, these “Zoozoos” in Vodafone TV ads for IPL may resemble animated characters with an alien look or simply alien egg head character with disproportional while bodies and black dot for eyes and mouth.
These Zoozoo characters have been created by the creative team at Ogilvy and Mather (O&M) India for Vodafone to convey different value added services offered by the mobile phone giant as a part of the IPL sponsorship campaign.
The Vodafone are sure to go down in the marketing history of the world as the cutest and most memorable characters on TV.
Each Zoozoo character uses a story which is enacted by these creatures. At a glance, Zoozoos look like animated creations, but in fact real think professional ballet artists from South Africa wearing masks and white fabric stuffed wit foam.
Prakash Varma, who directed the Vodafone ZooZoo commercials, told that they only had women – and occasionally children – as their main cast to keep the hands and legs thin of the Zoozoo characters.
HindustanTimes reports : Rajiv Rao, creative director of the agency that handles Vodafone advertisements, said: “We wanted to make real people look as animated as possible. Our actors were small-bodied, thin women covered in layers of white fabric. Each facial expression was made of rubber and pasted on the actors.” A film shot at 20 frames per second made the Zoozoo’s movements hurried and comical. Of the 30 different Zoozoo ads created for the IPL, there will be a new one everyday .
The ads, 15 of which have been aired until now, have become popular with viewers. So much so that one of them, an ad for beauty tips over the phone, was viewed 13,000 times last week on YouTube. The Zoozoos have also taken Facebook by storm. They have nearly 50,000 friends.
Each of the 30 ads will promote a different value-added service on offer by Vodafone, from maps to stock alerts.
I came across a great blog called “Me, Myself and the Zoozoos” by Sakshit, New Delhi on www.sakshit.blogspot.com that inspired me to make it as the title for this article.
