Mangalore: Canara, Vivekananda Colleges emerge chess champions

Mangalore, September 15, 2009: Canara College, Mangalore and Vivekananda College, Puttur have emerged as the champions in Men’s and Women’s sections respectively at the Mangalore University Inter Collegiate Chess Tournament held at St Aloysius College Mangalore.

The prizes were distributed to the winners during the valedictory function held today at 5:00 P.M at Arrupe Block of St Aloysius College. A total of 28 teams in Men’s category and 11 teams in Women’s category had participated in this two day event which was inaugurated on 14th September 2009.

The prize distribution was conducted by Mr. Donnet D’Souza, Convenor of the Mangalore University Inter- Collegiate Chess tournament.

Mr. Augustine Dias, Senior Physical Director of Milagres College, Kallianpur distributed the board prizes to the winners in women’s category. The winners were Dhavala Suri of St Aloysius College, Medini V.I. of Alvas College, Supritha of S. S.V.S. College Bantwal and Shree Shaila of Vivekananda College.

Deric Pinto, Administrator of  Deriks’ Chess School distributed the board prizes to the winners in Men’s section. The winners were  Kaushik .R of Canara College, Sandesh of Milagres college Kalianpur, Ganesh Kumar of Canara College and Vijayesha J. of Vivekananda College Puttur.

Dr. Gerald Santhosh D’Souza, Asst Director of Physical Education Mangalore University distributed the team championship prizes to the winners in women’s section. The first prize was bagged by Vivekananda College, Puttur while St. Aloysius College, Mangalore was Runner Up. St. Mary’s Syrian College won the third place.

Rev. Fr. Swebert D’Silva Principal of St Aloysius College Mangalore distributed the team championship prizes in men’s section. The first place was bagged by Canara College, Mangalore while Vivekananda College was the Runner up. Milagres College, Kallianpur secured the third place.

The Chief Guest, Mr Gerald Santhosh D’Souza, Asst. Physical Director Mangalore University, the Guests of Honour, Mr. Augustine Dias, Senior Physical Director of Milagres College, Kallianpur & Mr. Deric Pinto Administrator, Derik Chess School, Mangalore, the Convenor Mr. Donnet D’Souza, Physical Director, St. Aloysius College, Mr. Desmond Anthony (Secretary Sports Association) were present on the dais.

Ms. Avril D’Silva conducted the proceedings of the valedictory function. Mr. Donnet D’Souza, Convenor welcomed the gathering. A floral welcome was given to the guests present on the dais. Desmond Antony Sports Secretary of the college delivered the vote of thanks.
