Mangalore, October 27, 2009: The staff and students of Karnataka Theological College, Mangalore held the Service of Installation of the New Principal of the College Rev. Dr Hannibal Richard Cabral and bid farewell to the out-going Principal of the College Rt. Rev. Dr. J. S. Sadananda at 4:30 pm at the Bishop Jathanna Auditorium, Balmatta.
The program started with a Prayer Service lead by the former Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. C L Furtado, and the teaching staff of Karnataka Theological College – Rev. D.I. Hans, Rev. Sydney Salins, Dr. D.Dhanaraj, Dr. Annie Watson and Rev. P. James.
Rev. Dr. D. Dhanraj welcomed the gathering.
Rt. Rev. Prabhakara Rao, President of the Karnataka Christian Educational Society; Bishop of the Church of South India at Karnataka Northern Diocese and Rt Rev. S. Vasantha Kumar, Bishop of Karnataka Central Division, Dr. J.S. Sadananda Principal of the College who has been consecrated as the Bishop of Karnataka Southern Diocese were present on the dais.
Addressing the gathering Rt. Rev. Vasantha Kumar said that “The moment we surrender ourselves to the Lord as a Leader, he blesses us with his holy spirit”. He also said that in a Christian community a Leader builds or prepares other leaders and forms a team for the betterment of society.
The Service of Installation of Dr. Hanibal Richard Cabral as the new Principal of the College was done by Rt. Rev. J. Prabhakara Rao, President of the Karnataka Christian Educational Society and the Bishop of the Church of South India at Karnataka Northern Diocese. Rt. Rev. S. Vasantha Kumar delivered the message from the Bible on this special occasion. The new Principal Dr. Cabral was felicitated with flowers, shawl and memento.
Later, Dr. Hanibal Richard Cabral addressed the gathering and said that Conscience is shaped by our understanding of the truth. It should always be formed in the truth of Jesus Christ which, as Scripture reminds us, is embodied in the teaching of the Church.
A Farewell was given to the outgoing Principal Dr. J.S. Sadananda who was consecrated as the Bishop of Karnataka Southern Diocese recently. He was felicitated with flowers, shawl and memento. Dr. H.M. Watson, the Treasurer of the Society delivered the farewell address. Mr. R. Chetan, Principal of Hebich Technical Training Institute delivered words of nobility.
Dr. Laksman Prabhu conveyed words of appreciation to the new Principal Dr. Hanibal Richard Cabral on behalf of the gathering.
Dr. D.R. Sadananda delivered the vote of thanks.
Former Bishop Devaraja Bangera, Dr. Victor Machado, Rector of St. Joseph’s Seminary and several other dignitaries attended the programme. The entire program was compeered by Rev. D.I. Hans.
Dr. Cabral born in 1955 is a native of Mangalore. He joined KTC in 1971 for B.Th and later completed B.D from the same college. He obtained his M.Th in Christian Education from United Theological College, Bangalore 1990 and M.Th in Speech Communication from Princeton Theological Seminary, USA in the year 1993. He earned his D.Th from the Senate of Serampore College, West Bengal, through SATHRI at UTC. He was ordained as Deacon in 1976 and as Presbyter in 1980. He served as Deacon from 1976-77 at Tarikere. As honorary pastor he served at different churches from 1978-1988 and from 2000-to until now. In between he also had the opportunity to serve as the honorary presbyter at Boston in 1996-97 and August 2007-June 2008 in Methodist church in Northwildwood, New Jersey, USA.
He has made significant contributions to music, drama and literature and has won accolades: Excellent Organizer – Indienhilfe 1991, Christa Kala Rathna in 2002 for contribution to Christian Arts, and John Hands Memorial Award of Bible Society of India, Karnataka Auxiliary for the contribution to the Christian Ministry in 2004.
He is married to Sujatha Shalini, and they are blessed with two children: Rachitha Poornima, lecturer of Engish at Bishop Cotton Women’s College, Bangalore married to Amoret Paul Samraj, an IT Professional, and blessed with a daughter Larisa Shekinah; Vineeth Cabral is working at Hyatt Regency, Mumbai and is married to Esther Rakshitha working as ground staff at Jet Airways, Mumbai.
The Karnataka Theological College was established in 1847 by the Basel Mission. It was established with a name B.E.M. Theological Seminary by Dr. Hermann Moegling. He was the one who started the first Kannada news paper Mangaluru Samachara and his contribution to Kannada literature is well known. B.E.M. Theological Seminary was training protestant priests for the churches in Karnataka and Malabar area.
In 1965 BEM Theological Seminary and the Methodist Seminary, Tumkur merged together and the college was renamed as Karnataka Theological College. In 1967, Dr. C.D. Jathanna, the then Principal of the College formed Karnataka Christian Educational Society with the Institute Hebich Technical Training Institute and with the College as the nucleus. He added several new educational institutions such as Balmatta Institute of Priniting Technology, Balmatta Institute of Commerce, KACES ITI in Stichcraft, KACES Hostel, and Moegling Institute of German Language. At Present Karnataka Theological College offers Bachelor of Divinity degree course, which is the basic training to become a priest in a Protestant Church. The students are basically from Church of South India, Lutherans and Methodists and this is the only regional Theological College which offers training in Kannada language in Karnataka.
