Mangalore, December 17, 2009: The above quote was clearly identifiable in each Aloysian marching proudly on the Centenary Grounds of the century old St. Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore on the occasion of 130th Annual Sports Meet which was held today at 9:00 AM.
The inaugural program began with invoking God’s blessings; the College Choir led us into prayer. Rev. Fr. Swebert D’Silva, Principal welcomed the gathering.
Mr. Arthur D’Souza, an Eminent Sportsperson, Rev. Fr. Joseph Rodrigues, Rector – St. Aloysius Institutions and Rev. Swebert D’Silva, Principal were present on the dais. A floral welcome was given to the all the guests on the dais.
Prof. Donnet D’Souza, Manager of the Sports Meet escorted the guests for the team inspection followed by the Flag Hoisting Ceremony. The College Flag was hoisted by Rev. Fr. Joseph Rodrigues.
Mr. Arthur who is also an Eminent Sportsperson and Manager of Karnataka Bank, Balmatta, declared the Sports Meet open by emancipating the pigeons representing Unity, Peace and Freedom. Adolph Lobo, Sports Secretary delivered the Oath to the students.
Later, during the Torch Lighting Ceremony Mr. Arthur D’Souza, Chief Guest raised the torch and acknowledged the message of unity, brotherhood and a true sportsman’s sprit.
Addressing the gathering Fr. Joseph said that to grow in sprit we need to honour our body, good physique speaks of good embodies. He added saying that our sexuality being male or female affects the relationship with others and denying the worthiness of the body is an insult to the upcoming Christmas Celebration.
In his address to the students Mr. Arthur, Chief Guest said that, to be a successful Sportsperson needs hard work and dedication; to get fame we go through some shortcuts like painkillers and other drugs, this might help you for sometime, but for the long run it may be disastrous for the health. He concluded saying that participation is more important because it gives happiness.
Prof. Donnet D’Souza delivered the Vote of Thanks.
Mr. Arthur D’Souza was the Chief Guest, Rev. Fr. Joseph Rodrigues, Rector – St. Aloysius Institutions was the Guest of Honour and Fr. Swebert D’Silva, Principal presided over the function.
The 130th Sports day saw the active participation of students through out the day. DJ Monty kept the students entertained with his latest collection of foot tapping tracks. The College Band was lead by Mr. Adolph and his team of students.
Dr. N.D. Shetty was the Chief Guest of the Closing Ceremony held later in the day. In his address to the students he said that Sports is an ever developing part in a person’s life; it is a talent inherited by almost all, but identified by only a few number of people. He further added that hard work and everyday efforts is only the key to success.
Later Rev. Fr Swebert D’Silva and Dr. Shetty distributed the prizes to the winners of the March-Past, Relay, and the Overall Champions.
Mr. Arun, Asst. Manager – Sports Meet delivered the Vote of Thanks. Dr. N. D Shetty lowered the flag, and presented it to Prof. Donnet D’Souza and declared the 130th Annual Sports Meet of St Aloysius College closed.
