Mangalore, March 04, 2010: Life skills are psycho-social and interpersonal skills that help to make knowledgeable decisions communicate and manage our self in personal and inter-personal relationships, said Sr. Marie Evelyn Head of the Department of Psychology, St. Agnes College (Autonomous). She was speaking after inaugurating the seminar on ‘Life Skills Approach in Clinical Practice’ organized by the Human Wellness Forum of St. Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore at the College Auditorium.

Sr Marie also illustrated how life skills help in maintaining our physical and mental health and also contribute in developing a healthy life style.

Ms. Shobitha Shanthakumari, Psychiatric Social Worker – NIMHANS spoke on the first session on the topic ‘Capacity Building through Life Skills: Children and Adolescent Focused’. Ms. Shobitha also held group discussions which dealt with the changes, interests, life skills and values that can be developed in these two developmental stages.

Mrs. Aruna Gojer, Coordinator for Counseling and Women’s Fellowship of Karnataka speaking on ‘Enhancing the Quality of Marital Life’ said that marriage is a sacred bond that unites the couple and emphasized on the role of husband and wife in leading a pleasant married life.

Dr. Baby Shari, Reader in Psychology, Calicut University spoke on the concluding session on the topic ‘Achieving Personal and Professional Growth: Life skills Approach’.  Dr. Baby Shari dealt with the important life skills and how they shape us as a productive human being in our personal and professional domains.

Earlier the programme began by invoking God’s blessing with a prayer song lead by the MSW students. Sr. Marie Evelyn, HOD – Department of Psychology, St. Agnes College (Autonomous) was the Chief Guest and Rev. Fr Francis D’Almeida, Dean – MSW Department presided over the inaugural ceremony. Ms. Loveena Lobo, HOD – MSW Department, Ms. Pearl Barboza, Program Convenor, and Jim Jacob, Student Convenor were also present on the dais. The guests officially inaugurated the seminar by lighting the traditional lamp.

The valedictory function was presided over by Rev Fr Francis D’Almeida, Dean – MSW Department. He highlighted the importance of life skills in achieving personal growth leading to maturity. He also emphasized on the need of listening skills to be effective as a professional. Mr. Jim Jacob, Student Coordinator delivered the Vote of Thanks.
