Mangalore University Chess Team ’09 selections held in St. Aloysius College

Mangalore Sept 17: The selection trials of chess were held in St. Aloysius College today, 16th September 2009 at 9:00 A.M. 36 players from various colleges participated. Best 6 participants will be selected. There were 5 rounds for every participant and the selected team will represent Mangalore University in Hosur, Bangalore.

The Physical Dept and Sports Association of St. Aloysius College (Autonomous) under the guidance of the Mangalore University conducted the selection process.

Earlier the instructions were explained to the participants by the Convenor, Mr. Donnet D’Souza, Physical Director of St Aloysius College.

Mangalore, September 15, 2009: Canara College, Mangalore and Vivekananda College, Puttur have emerged as the champions in Men’s and Women’s sections respectively at the Mangalore University Inter Collegiate Chess Tournament held at St Aloysius College Mangalore.

The prizes were distributed to the winners during the valedictory function held today at 5:00 P.M at Arrupe Block of St Aloysius College. A total of 28 teams in Men’s category and 11 teams in Women’s category had participated in this two day event which was inaugurated on 14th September 2009.

The prize distribution was conducted by Mr. Donnet D’Souza, Convenor of the Mangalore University Inter- Collegiate Chess tournament.

Mr. Augustine Dias, Senior Physical Director of Milagres College, Kallianpur distributed the board prizes to the winners in women’s category. The winners were Dhavala Suri of St Aloysius College, Medini V.I. of Alvas College, Supritha of S. S.V.S. College Bantwal and Shree Shaila of Vivekananda College.

M’lore University Inter-Collegiate Chess tournament opens at St. Aloysius College

Mangalore, September 14, 2009: The Mangalore University Inter-Collegiate Chess Tournament was inaugurated at St. Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore. The 3 day event kick started today and will continue till 16th September. 28 teams in men’s category and 11 women teams are taking part in this event.

The Chief Guest, Mr Gerald Santhosh D’Souza, Asst. Physical Director Mangalore University, Guests of Honour Mr. Deric Pinto and Mr. Prasanna Rao, Administrators, Derik Chess School, Mangalore, The Convenor Mr. Donnet D’Souza, Physical Director St Aloysius College (Autonomous) and Ms. Jane Melissa Monise, Secretary Sports Association were present on the dais.

The program started with a prayer song lead by the college choir, followed by lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest, President, Guests of Honour and the Convenor along with the Sports Association Secretary. Mr. Donnet D’Souza, Convenor welcomed the gathering. A floral welcome was given to the guest present on the dais.

“Primary and High School students are excelling in Chess in the State and National level tournaments, but there is a shortage in number of College Chess players representing the State and Nationals. The reason is, that the students either discontinue because professional institutions fail to encourage these kinds of games” said Mr. Gerald Santhosh D’Souza the Chief Guest. “There is a need for more encouragement and a good platform for students to excel in Chess” he added.
